When some people are considering getting into studio photography, the very first ‘obstacle’ they see is lack of studio space.

You do NOT have to have access to some 2,400 square foot studio with soaring 12 foot ceilings. You don’t have to have north facing windows providing beautiful natural light.
Seriously.
All you “need” is an area that is approximately 10′ wide with a shooting distance of 10-20′ long.
This doesn’t mean that you need a room that is 20′ long.
In the first example on the right, you can see how you can set up in a living room.
But, maybe your living room isn’t big enough – or your furniture takes up lots of space.

In that case, see if it’s possible to shoot into the living room from the dining room (as seen in the second diagram.
You can often shoot through a hallway, or a doorframe, etc – even from a spare bedroom, into the hallway.
I’ve had sessions in a client’s home in a room that was smaller than 10×10.
Is it ideal? No. Can it be done – you bet!
If you are really limited for space, you may find that a 3-light high-key setup won’t work because your subject are too close to the backdrop (and thus, are getting blasted by the backdrop lights)
In that case, you can try a one light set-up with the white backdrop. The simple one-light setting I use for my black backdrops work great in tight settings.

The photos of the kids I’ve posted were taken in a space no bigger than 4′ x 8′ at a charity event I did – can you tell we are in a small space? I don’t think so.
Would they look any better if we were in a large studio? No!
So, if the lack of a ‘formal’ studio space is one of the things holding you back, it’s time to push that roadblock aside!
